Why do we need to do a salt spray test?

Salt spray test is a common corrosion resistance test, which is mainly used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of metal materials or surface coatings in salt spray environments. It simulates salt spray corrosion in marine or humid environments to accelerate the test of the product’s anti-oxidation and anti-rust properties.

The main reasons for doing salt spray testing include:

1.Evaluate product corrosion resistance

Salt spray testing can simulate harsh corrosion environments and help determine the corrosion resistance of metal materials, coatings, plating or surface treatments. For example, products such as home hardware and cabinet handles usually need to undergo salt spray testing to ensure that they are not prone to rust or corrosion during long-term use in humid or coastal environments.

2.Verify product quality

Through salt spray testing, process defects in materials or coatings can be detected, such as whether the coating is uniform, whether there are bubbles, cracks or peeling, thereby ensuring product consistency and reliability.

3.Extend product life

Products with good corrosion resistance are not easily affected by the environment in actual use, thereby extending service life, reducing maintenance costs, and improving customer satisfaction.

4.Comply with industry standards and customer requirements

Many industries (such as automobiles, home hardware, electronics, electrical, etc.) have clear salt spray test standards (such as ASTM B117, ISO 9227). Testing can ensure that products meet international or customer quality standards and enhance market competitiveness.

Types of Salt Spray Test

Salt spray test is mainly divided into the following types, and different types of tests are suitable for different materials and application scenarios:

1.Neutral Salt Spray Test (NSS)

Test method: Use 5% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution, pH value between 6.5~7.2, spray temperature at 35℃.

Scope of application: The most commonly used salt spray test method, suitable for evaluating the corrosion resistance of metal materials, plating (such as zinc plating, nickel plating), coating and anodized film.

Features: Neutral environment, mild corrosion rate, suitable for most metal materials.

2.Acetic Acid Salt Spray Test (ASS)

Test method: Add glacial acetic acid to the neutral salt spray test solution to reduce the solution pH to 3.1~3.3, and the spray temperature is still 35℃.

Scope of application: Mainly used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of decorative electroplating layers (such as copper plating, nickel plating, chrome plating).

Features: Due to the enhanced acidity, the corrosion is stronger than the neutral salt spray test, and it is more suitable for testing precious metals or decorative coatings.

3.Copper-Accelerated Acetic Acid Salt Spray Test (CASS)

Test method: Add copper chloride (CuCl₂) to the acetate spray solution to keep the pH value at 3.1~3.3 and increase the spray temperature to 50℃.

Scope of application: Mainly used to test coatings with higher requirements in the aviation, automotive and electroplating industries, especially aluminum alloy anodized films and high-end decorative electroplating layers.

Features: It is very corrosive and is a type of accelerated corrosion test, usually used for products with high corrosion resistance requirements.

4.Cyclic Corrosion Test (CCT)

Test method: Alternate the salt spray test with wet heat, dryness, condensation and other environments to simulate more complex actual environmental conditions.

Scope of application: Suitable for testing products such as outdoor application materials, automotive parts, and metal structural parts.

Features: Closer to the actual natural environment corrosion process, it can more comprehensively evaluate the corrosion resistance of materials.

5.Humidity Salt Spray Test

Test method: Place the sample alternately in high humidity (usually above 95% relative humidity) and salt spray environment.

Scope of application: Commonly used to test the moisture and salt spray resistance of coating materials, electronic components, PCB boards and other products.

Features: Mainly focus on the stability and antioxidant capacity of materials in high humidity and corrosive environments.

6.Programmable Salt Spray Test

Test method: Use programmable equipment to accurately control test conditions such as salt spray, humidity, temperature, and drying to simulate more complex environmental changes.

Scope of application: High-precision testing fields such as aviation, military industry and high-tech electronic products.

Features: Strong flexibility, and the test conditions can be customized according to the actual application scenario.
